New global platform, Mass Participation World (MPW), launches in Singapore and London
Chris Robb, of Mass Participation Asia, and Mike Laflin, of Global Sports Strategies, announced the launch of their new partnership, Mass Participation World (MPW) in Singapore and London today.
The mass participation industry is seeing rapid growth and expansion across the globe.
At the recent IAAF conference in Lanzhou, China, research conducted by Jens Jakob Anderson, CEO of RunRepeat.com, showed that participation in marathons alone globally has increased by 40% in the last 10 years with 506% growth in Africa, 263% in Asia, 66% in Oceania, 43% in Europe and 21% in North America. South America is the only region to show a decline, 14%, in the last ten years. Global growth is also occurring in other traditional mass participation verticals such as cycling, triathlon, swimming and obstacle races especially in emerging markets such as Asia.
Brands, governments, cities, federations and rights holders are constantly looking to understand more about the Mass Participation space.
Mass Participation World will aim to facilitate year-round engagement with all key stakeholders across four verticals:
- A growing network of conferences starting with the fourth edition of the rebranded Mass Participation World in Singapore from 2-4 December alongside the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon and expanding into Europe and beyond from 2020
- The building of an insights platform to provide data and insights to all industry stakeholders on a year-round basis
- Consulting and advising
- Education to help drive best practice and train the future leaders of the industry.
Chris Robb, who has over 35-years of experience in the mass participation industry, has developed a strong foundation in Asia with Mass Participation Asia which brings together experts from all over the world to discuss issues and share ideas on the development of the Mass Participation industry.
Chris was formerly the organiser of the Singapore Marathon, managing over 60,000 runners and the Founder of Cycle Asia. He has been at the helm of events involving more than 1 million participants and is also the author of Mass Participation Sports Events.
“I am massively excited to have the opportunity to build on the success of MPA over the past three years together with Mike to harness our combined 65 years of experience at such an exciting time for the industry. I passionately believe that Mass Participation has a huge role to play in the future health and wellbeing of the world” said Robb.
Chris will be partnering with Mike Laflin, former CEO and founder of Sportcal, who has over 30-years’ experience in data, research and technology in the international sports industry.
Mike started life in the sports industry, in 1989, as a technology consultant to international sports federations including the IAAF (Athletics), ITF (Tennis), WS (Sailing), BWF (Badminton) and WA (Archery) before founding Sportcal in 1991.
Laflin said “As shared in my presentation at the IAAF Global Running Conference in Lanzhou, I believe that most Mass Participation events are significantly under-valuing the outcomes that they create by overlooking key elements such as volunteers and spectators as well as social and health benefits. I’m hugely excited to partner with Chris to help provide the industry with the insights needed to better establish these outcomes.”
